There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall gaming is not permitted. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a generally small location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect destination, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing capital gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million, and there are a number of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; however, investment sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and even though visas are supposedly necessary to pass, there are means around this, as is true of most border crossings.
The original Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked boat gambling hall, highlights 150 slot machine games and 60 tables. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machine games and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the familiar gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around resort and hotel complex that features numerous amenities in addition to the gambling hall, which contains ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 tables.
