There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just over the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where gambling hall betting is not allowed. Eight gambling dens are established in a generally tiny space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a prime location, a three to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of limitations constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; although, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and though visas are for all intents and purposes required to pass, there are ways around this, as is true of many borders.
The original Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored boat gambling hall, highlights one hundred and fifty slot machine games and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long followed. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 one armed bandits and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 gaming tables, including 87 punto banco (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around resort and hotel compound that features many amenities on top of the gambling hall, which contains ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 table games.
